Djanet: what to see and do?
Gateway to the Tassili n’Ajjer, Djanet is the Algerian Sahara’s flagship destination. The highlights.
The red Tadrart
South-east of Djanet: pink and orange dunes between sandstone cliffs, natural arches and thousands of engravings. Allow at least 5 days by 4×4.
The Tassili plateau
A UNESCO site, the plateau holds one of the world’s largest collections of rock art, at Sefar and Tin Tazarift. It is reached on foot, with donkeys carrying the bags.
Around town
The Weeping Cow at Tegharghart, the golden dunes of Erg Admer, the old ksar of Azelouaz and the palm grove. One or two days are enough.
Getting there
Djanet has an airport linked to Algiers; routes vary with the season. Foreign visitors get their visa on arrival if the trip is organised by a licensed agency.
